Aarhus Legal Aid 90 years
A celebration of legal certainty and voluntariness
For 90 years, we have made law accessible to everyone.
On September 5, 2025, Aarhus Legal Aid celebrated its 90th anniversary. Since 1935, we have worked to ensure free legal advice for everyone – regardless of income, background or place of residence.
With more than 4,400 annual inquiries, we are today Denmark's second largest legal aid. Over the years, thousands of volunteer advisors, law students and employees have contributed to making legal aid a unique offering where everyone can get help navigating a complex legal system.
A day of celebration with professional perspectives
The anniversary was celebrated in the FO-byen, where we gathered volunteers, partners and friends of the house. The program offered both professional presentations, music and fellowship:
- Welcome by Chairman of the Board Adam L. Christensen and General Manager Kirsten Hassing Nielsen.
- Professor Bettina Lemann Kristiansen spoke about the history of legal aid since its establishment in 1935.
- Professor emeritus Jens Vedsted-Hansen gave an insight into the development of immigration law and Aarhus Legal Aid's special role with the Immigration Service.
- Andrew Hjuler Crichton, Secretary General of the Danish Bar Association, spoke about the importance of legal aid – both for clients and for the legal community as a whole.
There were also musical performances, opportunities for networking and, not least, singing together:
"We are Aarhus Legal Aid" – written and performed especially for the occasion.
Volunteers – the heart of legal aid
Every year, around 30 volunteer advisors join Aarhus Legal Aid. Many of them start during their studies and get their first practical experience with law. For most of them, it is not only a professional stepping stone, but also a chance to make a real difference for people in vulnerable situations.
Michael, one of our volunteer counselors, says: "For me, volunteering at Legal Aid is about more than just law. It's about being able to make a difference for other people."
The future of legal aid
The need for free legal advice has not diminished – quite the opposite. We see increasing complexity in legislation and a growing need for both personal and digital legal assistance.
Aarhus Legal Aid will continue to be a place where citizens can receive qualified help regardless of background, where law students can develop professionally and personally, and where legal certainty is made available to everyone.
